Yuletide 2016 Letter

Dear Lovely Yuletide Writer,

Thank you so much for offering to write in one of my requested fandoms! I'm really looking forward to reading your fic.

Before I get into the requests, as a general rule I prefer that nothing goes about PG-13/T or that if it goes more into an M territory that there isn't a great deal of violence, and sex is of the fade-to-black variety.

The Paradise
Character Requested: Miss Audrey

I'd love a story that centers on Miss Audrey. I have so many questions about her. What was she doing before she worked at The Paradise? Does she have any living family, and if so, who are they, where are they, and what do they do? How did she come to be head of ladies wear? Does she have a secret hobby, like writing penny dreadfuls or designing hats or composing humerous poems?

Or what about an A/U where Miss Audrey takes to heart some of things Clemence says and decides that rather than marrying or staying at The Paradies she'd like to strike out and find another position somewhere either in England or perhaps even Paris. Does she go into business with Clemence?

Or tell me more what her life is like now that she's married. Is she happy with her choice? How difficult is the adjustment? The last time we see her, and see Edmund, both of them still seem to be struggling with that decision. Does she find contentment, or is it only better than being edged out by Denise?

Extra optional detail, since I only requested Miss Audrey - if you would like to add a dash of romance to the story, please feel free. Miss Audrey/Edmund or Miss Audrey/Clemence would be the most interesting, I think, but if you've got another pairing in mind for her go for it.

Murder, She Wrote
Characters Requested: Jessica Fletcher, Harry McGraw

I love these two, and would be happy with anything you write me for them, though I’d prefer something with humor and/or lightness, over pathos and dark!fic, with the exception of if you want to write noir for them that would be amazing. Case fic would be delightful, but so would Jessica pulling Harry out of a scrape, or a little slice of a larger story, or character study, or pretty much anything. I love their comraderie and friendship and Harry’s somewhat dubious methods.

Some other ideas:
If you’re interested in A/U I’d love to see a universe where Jessica and Harry run a PI agency. I can’t quite see this as a totally in-character Jessica, because I think she has too many scruples to go into business with Harry, but it would be fun nonetheless.

In the episode “From the Horse’s Mouth” there is a brief moment where they call each other “Scarlett” and “Rhett” and I wanted so badly for there to be a costume ball later in that episode so that they could dress up appropriately. If you want to take that and run with it, please do. Historical A/Us of any era also extremely welcome for these two.

How about them going a getting a sandwich or to a diner, or having adventures riding the bus because Jessica can't drive and Harry has gambled his car away/had it stolen/had it impounded by the police. Write the story where one of Harry's pals shows up and complains about Harry borrowing his clothes/car/toaster/etc. Write Harry coming for a visit to Cabot Cove to catch his breath, only to get caught up in something in town.

Rosemary and Thyme:
Characters Requested: Laura Thyme and Rosemary Boxer

Cozy mystery + strong female characters + gardening. What's not to like?

Rosemary and Thyme is such a lovely, cozy show, with gorgeous set locations and great characters. I love Laura and Rosemary's relationship, their banter, their "oh no, you can't break in to the house that way - you're doing it wrong, let me show you a better way so we can get in and solve this mystery" approach to the world". I like that they have such a close bond but they're also perfectly okay to have their own space, or to go off separately for a while.

I would particularly love a story set in or around the episode "The Invisible Worm", which is the one where they go to the boy's school and there is that odd thing with the stag. If you're up for shipping them (though gen is totally fine!) maybe this is the episode where they start having a romantic relationship, or where one or both of them realizes they might have feelings for the other and starts pondering this?

There is pretty much nothing you could write (excepting excessive violence or smut) that I would dislike with these two. Slice of life, a mystery, dialogue only, parody, you can even take it dark, so long as it remains in the PG-13 category. I admit I general think in light-hearted terms for this show, but I'm open to dark if you want to go there. Also, if you want to do something silly (or serious) with that episode where they sort of adopt a baby, go for it!

Other ideas:
Perhaps Laura ends up talking Rosemary into another camping adventure, or they have to infiltrate a university, or Laura invites Rosemary over for Christmas with her and Laura's kids. Or maybe they have a couple of days between jobs and they get to just relax in one of those enormous houses and visit the little town without having to worry about a murder. Or feel free to play with tropes, especially romantic ones - undercover as married, etc.

For extra optional points, if you are familiar with Murder, She Wrote and would like to do a crossover or give J.B. Fletcher a cameo I would be utterly delighted.

Again, thank you so much dear Yuletide writer. I am very much looking forward to your fic!

Sincerely,

Emiline (AO3)/northeto (LJ)

Yuletide 2015 Letter

Dear Lovely Yuletide Writer,

My apologies for not quite getting this done before assignments went out. Oops!

Thank you so much for offering to write in one of my fandoms! I am looking forward to your story with great pleasure.

As you will no doubt discern from the length of this letter, I have a great many thoughts about my various requests, but please feel free to totally disregard my ramblings and write what you like, if you have some other idea for the fandom and characters that you’d like to pursue.  I have one general request, which is I’d very much prefer if you kept your story in PG-13/T territory, which is to say not excessively violent/gory, and in regards to sex I’m a fade-to-black kind of person.

On to the requests!

For your reference, in case you decide you want to pick another fandom than the one we were matched on, here’s where you can find:

Murder, She Wrote – Netflix – It’s more fun to watch the Michael Hagerty episodes in order (but you definitely don’t even have to have seen all the ones he has appeared in – I’ve seen 4 or 5 out of the six, I think), you don’t strictly need to. And the rest of the series is pretty accessible – many episodes have no series or season-long plot points.

Rosemary & Thyme – Netflix – Although there are some overarching plot points, and it’s a good idea to watch the first episode to get the set up, you can just dip in to this series if you like

Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen) – Project Gutenberg has several copies here http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/161 and your local library probably has a copy.
Sense and Sensibility isn’t too terribly long, and there are also two film adaptations that I know of – the 1995 version with Emma Thompson and a more recent BBC miniseries.

Murder, She Wrote

I love this show, even when it is cheesy and the plot has so many holes you could use it to strain spaghetti. I love Jessica and Seth's friendship and Seth's gruff, crusty New Englandness. I also really enjoy Jessica and Michael Hagarty's friendship and flirtation, and I definitely ship them. I'd be delighted to see a story where Seth gets pulled in to one of Michael's schemes, along with Jessica, or noses his way in because he's worried about his friend. A mystery would be fabulous but is by no means required. If you want them to all go out and get ice-cream or a bicycle trip or something I would be quite happy reading that. If shipping is your thing, I'm more inclined to Jessica/Michael than Jessica/Seth, but I will happily read either/both.
My instinct is towards fluffy lightheartedness with this show, but I’m also kind of intrigued by the idea of a dark story, so if the muse wants to go dark, go for it!

Rosemary and Thyme

Cozy mystery + gardening + strong female characters! What's not to like about that?

Rosemary and Thyme is such a lovely, cozy show, with gorgeous set locations and great characters. Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen)

It would tickle me pink, dear Yuletide writer, if you wrote me a non-smut love story of some sort between Colonel Brandon and Elinor. I am very fond of the book, and how things turned out there, but there is part of me that always wishes for Elinor/Brandon in some form. There are a couple of these stories on the A03, and floating around the internet, but it's a rare paring in an already-small fandom.

If shipping them is not your cup of tea, I will gladly read a friendship tale. The narrator of Sense and Sensibility describes some about how Brandon's acquaintance is the only new one that Elinor can take pleasure in – what books do they discuss? What interests do they have in common? We know they are much in company for a while in the book – what do they talk about, exactly? What makes them friends?

I'm never quite sure what it is that I want with these two, only that I know I want more of their relationship, be it friendship or more than that. So feel free to let your imagination run wild. If you'd like to do some kind of AU, or crossover with another fandom that you think I know (you can look at my lj, A03 and fanfiction.net), please feel free. Space Pirate AU? Middle Ages AU? Let your imagination run free!

Thank you again, dear Yuletide writer.

Sincerely,

Emiline/northeto (A03/LJ)

Yuletide Letter 2014

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you awesome Yuletide Writer! I’m really looking forward to reading your story! I didn't quite get this letter over here by the time assignments went out (oops!), but it's the same day, at least (Oct 31), where I am.

Just a couple of general thoughts:

I am indeed Emiline on the A03. I just have a different nom-de-plume over here on LJ.

I have platonic and shipping thoughts about all three of my requests, and I will be absolutely delighted with either platonic or shipping, whatever you’re most comfortable with.

If you do go with romance, I’d prefer nothing too explict. I’m a fade-to-black kind of person when it comes to sex. In general for all kinds of stories I usually read things rated T and under on A03.

Rosemary & Thyme

Basically, I just want more of Laura Thyme and Rosemary Boxer. I’d be delighted with another garderning mystery, or a story about them going on holiday somewhere (with or without a mystery plot), or going on a trip to visit friends/parents/children, or pretty much anything. Or maybe they go back to that boy’s school with the stag and that nice teacher who becomes headmaster and proposes to Laura. Maybe they decide to seriously teach other skills – Laura teaches Rosemary about police work and Rosemary teaches Laura some Latin or more about fixing the Jeep? A story that includes them as a ship would also be awesome – growing attraction/romance or an established relationship.

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

You truly can’t go wrong with Widow Twanky, Autolycus, and Salmoneous. I would absolutely adore some kind of continuation of the plot in “Men in Pink”, especially if it has Autolycus/Salmoneous and/or more bits with Widow Twanky flirting (not super-seriously) with Autolycus. Shipping or not, Autolycus and Salmoneous would get up to entertaining shenangins any time they met up, and the Widow Twanky is just an all-around great character. Maybe Autolycus and Salmoneous drop by to see her when the dance troupe comes to town? Or they get involved in a wacky plot to solve some mystery. I have no definite opinoin on whether Widow Twanky is an entirely separate character from Ioalus or not, so if that’s something you want to explore, go for it!

Sense & Sensibility

Colonel Brandon and Elinor’s friendship is one of my favorite parts of this book, and every time I re-read it, I wish there was more of them interacting.  I will be delighted with anything you want to write with them in it – in the course of the novel or post-novel. But if you’d like a little more to work with, I’d love a story that takes place after Edward’s proposal to Elinor but before Colonel Brandon and Marianne’s marriage – I’m sure they have a lot to talk about there, about how they will be living close to one another and Colonel Brandon might have something to say once he hears about Lucy Steele, etc. Or maybe they just sit around and talk about interesting books? I’m quite fond also, of the parts of the novel where people mistake them for a couple – more of that would be entertaining. Relatedly, though I love Brandon and Elinor’s platonic friendship, there is a tiny part of me that ships them, so if shipping is your cup of tea, I’m totally fine with that, as long as there is no Marianne-bashing, and I’d prefer there to be no adultery on Brandon or Elinor’s part.

Thank you again, and happy writing!

Emiline

The State of the Yuletide Fic

Yuletide fics are due in a little over a week! *Gulp*. Mine is coming along, although still far from finished. I have a beta this year, though, so I think that will help matters considerably. If nothing else, it is forcing me not to do all of my writing at the absolute last minute. External motivation

Now, back to the salt mines.

Dear Yuletide Author Letter 2013

[Updated 10/19/2013]

Dear Lovely Yuletide Author,

First of all, I’m sorry that I didn’t get this up before assignments went out. I hope you find your way to it anyway, unless you don't like optional details, in which case, ignore away!

Thank you so much for offering one of the fandoms I requested! I’m really looking forward to reading your story!

A couple of general notes before I dive into the specifics:

Three of my four requests include a romantic pairing or the possibility of a romantic pairing. I’m a fade-to-black kind of gal in the intimacy department for romance.

As to genre, I’m pretty flexible. Humor, angst, UST, horribly depressing things, etc. I am a particular fan of UST, things that make me think, and humor, if that helps.

On to the requests!Collapse )

Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: ~500
Spoilers: Immediately follows the end of 5x11 "Phoenix Rising". Cut line is one of Bester's from that episode.[Spoiler refresher on the episode (click to open)]
This is the one where Byron and some of his followers commit suicide rather than risk being taken by Bester and his gang.

A/N: B5 & its characters belong to J. Michael Straczynski. I'm just borrowing them for a bit. No profit made, no copyright infringement intended.

It's Babylon 5 Love Month!

Babylon 5 Love Month has come again! For those of you who don't know, B5 Love Month is an entire month in the summer where people post various things they have created to celebrate the excellent sci-fi show Babylon 5. This year B5 Love Month is happening in August, which means it is happening right now. B5 is really fabulous television, and there are always interesting and creative things created for the month. So go forth and check out babylon5_love. So far this year some wrote and recorded filk, and today someone posted a fic!
Title: A Matter of Perspective
Author: northeto (Emiline)
Characters/Pairings: Violet Crawley, Isobel Crawley, Carson/Hughes
Rating: K
Word Count: 469
A/N: This has been kicking around in my brain and on my computer for months, and I thought I’d better finish it or it would never stop niggling me. Violet and Isobel probably wouldn’t get into a conversation like this, not really, but it was fun to imagine them doing so. Expect American spelling and American punctuation of honorifics.

Disclaimer: Done for the love of characters and the show, and because the idea wouldn’t leave me alone. Julian Fellows owns them, not I, and he’s the one making money on them, also not I.

I really must insist you stay out of the private lives of the servantsCollapse )

Downton Abbey Season 3 Christmas Special

It's a little weird to be watching a Christmas special in the middle of February, but hey, the episode didn't actually have anything to do with Christmas, so I guess it's okay.

Why? Why, I ask you!?Collapse )
